Born into a multi-generational lineage of Master Puppeteers and carvers in a traditional Sundanese village, New York City-based artist Opeh Ohgo brings ancient heritage into contemporary spaces. Raised in an extended family household where the resonant music, theatrical storytelling, and intricate artistry of Wayang Golek Purwa theater formed the backdrop of daily life, Ohgo displayed an intuitive mastery of woodcarving from early childhood.

Today, she translates those ancestral techniques into functional contemporary art sculptures.

The Process: Born of Fire and Shadow

Each piece begins as a single, solid block of sustainably sourced tropical Mango Wood. Ohgo designs and carves the foundational form, sculpting dramatic negative spaces that echo the classic shadow-play silhouettes of her youth.

The sculpture is then subjected to an intense, transformative fire. Ohgo uses a torch to char the entire form—including the deepest negative hollows—until it is completely enveloped in black soot, as if born from a volcanic fire.

Once the piece is cast in total darkness, the true performance begins. Using meticulous, subtractive hand-carving techniques, Ohgo cuts directly through the charred surface. This reveals the vibrant, warm orange and golden hues of the hidden mango wood beneath. The resulting "spotted" pattern creates a striking, tactile contrast where ancient storytelling meets modern luxury.

Because each piece is entirely sculpted and pulled from the fire by hand, no two tables will ever be identical. It is a singular, powerful statement piece for artful living.
