Curator’s Essay

In Berkaca (2026), Balinese artist I Wayan Dendy Permana Putra explores the act of self-reflection through a heavily textured, painterly language. The title, Berkaca—meaning “to look in the mirror”—provides a conceptual framework for the composition, which centers on a solitary figure in profile within a layered architectural space.

The artwork draws directly from Dendy’s personal reflections. As he explains, Berkaca is inspired by “my life experiences and my desire to understand myself more deeply.” Through the work, he hopes to remind viewers to look within themselves, understand their life experiences, and learn from the past. He also hopes the painting can “offer meaning and encourage others to get to know themselves better.”

Dendy builds the composition through heavily worked layers of acrylic on canvas, combining strokes of ochre, moss green, and deep crimson. Rather than relying on sharp linework or definitive boundaries, he uses fluid, overlapping blocks of color and texture to construct the space.

Within this layered environment, abstract architectural forms, a solitary profile, and a clock face in the upper right contribute to a unified, tactile composition. The juxtaposition of the clock and the solitary figure invites reflection on the relationship between self-understanding and the passage of time.
