Artist I Made Ananda Krisna | Keep Smiling
Description
Curator’s Essay
In Keep Smiling (2026), Balinese artist I Made Ananda Krisna explores a personal philosophy rooted in optimism and emotional intent. “The deepest meaning behind the painting Keep Smiling is a reminder that, in everything we do, we should never forget to smile and maintain sincerity in our hearts,” Ananda shares.
Driven by an early admiration for Indonesian master painters Affandi and Nyoman Gunarsa, Ananda challenged himself to create basic sketches from a young age. “Over time, through consistent practice, those sketches gradually became part of my intuition,” he explains. This foundation led him to experiment with color, eventually developing his own highly stylized Wayang characters that distinguish his work.
On the Keep Smiling canvas, a densely repeated black-and-white pattern establishes an intricate visual rhythm. Against this meticulous ground, stylized Wayang characters in vibrant turquoise, pink, violet, and coral emerge with striking clarity, their fluid forms introducing variation, personality, and lively movement across the composition.
While watching his artistic family work every day made technique and color feel familiar, Ananda developed his practice largely on his own. “Growing up in a family of artists actually feels quite ordinary to me, because I have largely learned to paint on my own,” he notes. “Each of us has our own distinct artistic character. This is what makes our family different from the dynamics I often observe in the wider art world, where artists tend to follow or imitate one another’s styles.”
His family’s greatest influence, however, was the freedom they gave him to develop independently. As Ananda explains, “Their greatest influence was giving me the freedom to be different. Their support at home gave me the courage to experiment, eventually allowing me to create works such as Keep Smiling. My family is the root that keeps me grounded, but they are also the ones who give me wings to explore and discover my own artistic style.”
Ananda believes that technical skill is only part of an artist’s role. “For me, being an artist is not just about technical skill on the canvas. We must also be able to communicate,” he notes. “Relying solely on our paintings is not enough; we need to be able to share the stories behind our work so that their meanings can be fully understood.” For Ananda, this responsibility extends beyond communicating the meaning of his own work. As he explains, “It is even more meaningful when we use this ability to share knowledge and exchange ideas with young artists, helping to support the sustainable growth and regeneration of the art world.”
Through its vivid palette and meticulous linework, Keep Smiling brings Ananda’s distinctive, highly stylized Wayang characters to life, conveying the spirit of a joyful heart. It invites audiences to look beyond the surface, revealing a painting grounded in Ananda’s philosophy of optimism and sincerity.
