Artist Heru Japra Pramono | There is Always Love Behind the Red Umbrella | Senja Living Art Gallery
Description
Curator’s Essay and Exhibition Description
Featured prominently in Heru Japra Pramono’s (1970–2026) acclaimed "Selalu Ada Cinta Dibalik Payung Merah" (There is Always Love Behind the Red Umbrella) series, "Red Umbrella" represents a masterful intersection of emotional intimacy and global impressionistic landscapes.
Long based in Depok and Bali, Indonesia, Japra was celebrated for his profound focus on portraiture and scenes that capture the "radiance of the soul" (Pancaran Jiwa). In this series, the artist steps onto wet urban streets to explore themes of shelter, romance, and shared sanctuary.
The composition centers on a couple closely sheltered beneath a vibrant crimson canopy, which functions as the emotional nucleus of the work. For Japra, the red umbrella is not merely a utilitarian shield against a downpour, but a powerful visual metaphor for sanctuary and love thriving amidst a cold, rapidly shifting external environment.
Heru transforms a routine rainy evening into a luminous dreamscape, utilizing dense, expressive applications to turn the wet pavement into a dynamic mirror reflecting brilliant, warm ambers and neon streetlights.
Provenance and Dedication: A Note from the Founder
This piece is deeply personal to the soul of Senja Living. Heru Japra was not just a master of contemporary Indonesian figurative art and portraiture; he was a dear friend.
Living just three kilometers from each other in Bali, many of my evenings were spent enjoying coffee and rich conversation in his working open-barn roadside studio. Heru was always the indomitable host—quick to offer a chair, pour coffee, and seamlessly pick up his guitar to sing a song between sips and stories. Having spent time in Canada, his humorous tales of the True North were so brilliantly entertaining they would routinely bring tears of laughter to our eyes.
Just last year, I had the pleasure of hosting Heru as my guest at ArtBali. Walking those exhibition floors together, discussing the evolving trajectory of regional and national contemporary Indonesian art, and sharing our mutual passion for design is a memory I will carry forever. He had truly become a master of his craft, uniquely blending the glowing realism reminiscent of the Dutch Masters with the soulful depth of Indonesia's indigenous cultures.
It was Heru's explicit desire and intent to have his artwork reach the Senja Living Art Gallery community, entrusting me to curate his works on our platform. Today, we honor that posthumous collaboration.
Listing this original work from my private collection into the Senja Living Art Gallery platform is my way of honoring his legacy, his brilliant eye, his sharp wit, and the unforgettable impact he left on Bali, Depok, and all who had the privilege of meeting Heru at his working gallery.
